A tourist received outrage from others when she climbed the steps of an ancient Mayan temple and then decided to taunt the crowd of angry locals by dancing and chanting in Mexico.
The unidentified woman climbed to the top of The Castle, also known as the Pyramid of Kukulcan, in the Mexican state of Yucatán. One of the tallest and most remarkable examples of Maya architecture, this structure is an important monument in Mexican culture.
The video has gone viral with over four million views. In the video, the tourist climbed the steps without permission, and it appears that a man was telling her to come down.
As the disrespectful tourist makes her way back down the stairs, the video shows her taunting the onlookers by dancing and waving her hat at the crowd below.
At the bottom, the crowd gathers around her, and you can see the crowd shouting as she tries to get past.
The crowd yelled, “jail, jail, jail” and “lock her up.” The crowd eventually became so angry that they started throwing water bottles at the woman. One person in the crown even pulled the woman’s hair while others shoved her.
Eventually, the tourist was finally able to free herself from the crowd while being accompanied by the security staff of the archaeological site.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History issued a statement shortly after the video was released on social media stating that the monument had not been damaged.
According to the Latin America news outlet MercoPress, INAH authorities have yet to report the incident.
