The Bail Project, an organization that helps people bail out of jail with the help of big celebs like John Legend, Danny Glover, and Richard Branson, has recently been forced to close up shop after being sued by a man who was shot days after a shooter was released on bail by the organization. The incident is a tragic one, and it raises questions about the effectiveness of The Bail Project and how it chooses who to post bail for.
Rashawn Gaston-Anderson, who had a long rap sheet including attempted grand larceny, carrying a concealed weapon, felony burglary, and auto theft, was arrested on burglary charges and then released on a $3,000 bail posted by The Bail Project. Six days later, he shot Chengyan Wang 7 times, causing him permanent injuries. Wang is now suing The Bail Project, claiming that it did not do due diligence before posting bail for Gaston-Anderson. The Clark County D.A. who prosecuted Gaston-Anderson said that the organization was essentially vouching for the person.
The Bail Project has since been found to have violated the law by not registering with the Nevada Division of Insurance. This is a tragedy that could have been avoided, and it raises questions about how The Bail Project decided who to post bail for. Clearly, the organization needs to be more thorough in its due diligence when it comes to posting bail.
At the same time, it is important to note that a majority of people who are bailed out of jail by The Bail Project don’t go on to commit a crime.
