While a day at the beach is often thought of as a relaxing way to spend some time, it can also be a treasure hunt for those with metal detectors. Valuable objects such as lost jewelry, ancient coins, and even shipwrecks can be found beneath the sand.
For one such man, luck was on his side when he discovered a diamond ring worth $40,000 on a beach in Florida last month.
Joseph Cook found the buried treasure six inches deep in the sand at Hammock Beach in St. Augustine and immediately posted a video that he took while digging to his social media channels.
In the video, Cook,37, is yelling in shock, “No way, man. Whoah, look at that bad boy. Holy crap, that’s real.”
“This is the biggest diamond I ever found on the beach,” he continued.
Cook then decided to go to multiple jewelers to see if anyone had been looking for the lost ring. It was at one of these jewelers that he was told the precious gem set in a platinum band was worth $40,000.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he exclaimed.
Two weeks later, Joseph began to receive calls from a number that he didn’t recognize. Initially, he ignored them, but then he remembered the ring and thought that maybe it could be the owners of the ring.
Eventually, Cook joined a video call with a couple from Jacksonville, who had lost a ring that was similar.
“The wife said, ‘oh my god I can’t believe it’, and then she just started crying,” Cook said.
In just three short weeks from finding the ring, Joseph met the owners close to the spot he found it and returned the precious jewel.

“It felt really good,” Cook said. “I’ve returned sixty-thousand dollars of stuff this year, but nothing even close to this before.”
Though Cook did not receive a reward, he said he really wasn’t disappointed that he had to return it.
This isn’t the first time Cook has found a ring. In fact, he even wears a necklace with about 25 rings on it that are waiting for their rightful owners!
Cook said, “Karma’s always good. Every time I return an item, I find something better, so I’m happy I could give it back.”
