Anthony Hopkins celebrated a major milestone on Thursday, marking 47 years of sobriety. The Oscar-winning actor reflected on his battle with alcoholism in an inspiring video message, encouraging people to seek help if they are struggling. Hopkins, who turns 85 recently, said getting sober saved his life.
In the video, Hopkins opened up about his journey to sobriety and the struggles he faced. He noted that 47 years ago, he was in a “desperate situation, in despair and probably not long to live.” He stated that he had to acknowledge the fact that there was something “really wrong with me” and that this was a “kind of condition” known as alcoholism or addiction. Hopkins then urged his young followers to “be proud of yourself” and to “stay out of the circle of toxicity”.
Hopkins also shared his advice for people struggling with addiction and encouraged them to seek help. He noted that it is important to talk to a counselor or join a 12-step program. He also reminded people that “it doesn’t cost a thing” and that getting help can give them “a whole new life”.
Many of Hopkins’ famous followers commented on the video, including Hugh Jackman, Naomi Campbell, and Alec Baldwin. Campbell, who has been open about her struggles with addiction, thanked Hopkins for being a “shining beacon of light” on her own journey in recovery.
