Adam Sandler appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show Tuesday and Drew Barrymore, 47, revealed that she and her friend Cameron Diaz have dreamed about remaking the 1987 classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Speaking of her conversations with Diaz, Barrymore said, “Her and I did discuss remaking Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and I was like, ‘well, you know, Adam and I talk about that,'”
“Yeah, I’d let you do that,” Sandler told Barrymore during the interview on her show.
Barrymore also knew exactly which character she would play in her version of the comedic classic.
“But also… I want to play John Candy,” Barrymore told Sandler.
“Well… you could do a good Candy,” Sandler agreed.
While Barrymore seems to have it all planned out, it seems that there is already a remake of the film which celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. Who is slated to star in it? None other than Kevin Hart and Will Smith.
Deadline reported in August 2020 that the two actors will star in a reimagined version of the classic film for Paramount Pictures. Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Smith’s Westbrook Studios are set to produce the movie.
“Me and Will have been talking about doing a movie for the longest time and we just [couldn’t] put our finger on what that movie was,” Hart told Entertainment Tonight in October 2020.
“So, for us to get to a point where we agree that said material was our project — because our personalities not only fit, but we could really pop in this situation — it was just a no-brainer,” Hart continued.
“Remaking this movie is something we are excited about,” he said. “We can’t wait to do it. The studio’s happy and it’s about rolling my sleeves up and getting the script to where it’s supposed to be.”
Hart, 43, and Smith, 54, plan to make their own version of the movie, which starred Steve Martin and the late John Candy. The movie told the story of two men who by a series of unfortunate events, share a three-day journey full of more misadventures all while trying to get home to their families in Chicago for Thanksgiving.
There is no set date for the movie as it is still in development.
